Description

The catalogue, published to accompany the eponymous exhibition, aims to introduce to the public the various methods for investigating artworks from the perspective of both art history and natural sciences. Using an attractive format, the publication demonstrates the advantages of the interdisciplinary collaboration. The theme of this exhibition catalogue is a response to the long-term interest voiced by visitors to permanent exhibitions regarding the meticulous investigation and restoration of artworks - in this case, terracotta sculptures. Various investigation methods are presented in expert texts, providing the reader with a glimpse beneath the surface of artworks. Not only will they find out how a materials analysis is evaluated, but chiefly they will learn how this research helps during the restoration process and in the day - to -day care of cultural heritage. The restoration process is shown using one of Matteo di Giovanni's exceptional works, which was restored for the exhibition.
